Oluwafemi Adekanye, better known as Big Z, is steadily gaining ground in Nollywood as both an actor and filmmaker. A Performing Arts graduate from the University of Ilorin, Big Z is earning attention for his versatility across acting, scriptwriting, and directing.
He recalled facing several obstacles at the start of his career. One of the most pressing issues was his struggle to speak Yoruba fluently, which caused some directors to doubt his ability. Over time, he worked hard to improve, mastering the language and proving himself on set.
Another early challenge was getting to locations without a car. Travelling between different states for shoots was a serious hurdle. Today, he says things are better, and those early days taught him the importance of persistence.
Despite the rough patches, Big Z noted that breaking into the Yoruba movie scene came easier than expected. According to him, his build, presence, and strong sense of respect gave him an edge. He stressed that the Yoruba movie sector is built on mutual respect, and showing that to everyone helped him gain acceptance quickly.
He described his most challenging role as the lead in Afesona, an epic film in which he played a prince who becomes king. The script was filled with deep Yoruba expressions, incantations, and proverbs. Mastering it took time, but he pulled it off with dedication, earning praise from the producers and directors.
Speaking about what keeps him going, Big Z said his drive comes from his hunger for success and a deep desire to make his mother proud. He aims to excel in every role and grow his influence in the industry.
Big Z has featured in several films and TV series, including Dear Future Me, Itura, Venge, and Ajoche, on Africa Magic. His presence also extends to YouTube, where he has appeared in titles like Till The Dust Settles, Love Intentional, Afesona, Ibasepo, Adehun, Baba Kekere, Ire Ife, Alaya Pupo, Cracks, and Oba Koshoro.
With consistent growth and a clear passion for the craft, Oluwafemi Adekanye continues to build a name for himself in Nigeria’s movie scene.
