Fluminense defeated Inter Milan 2-0 on Monday to advance to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup, eliminating the Italian side from the tournament. The match, played in Charlotte, saw the Brazilian club strike early and defend with discipline against the growing pressure of the second half.
German Cano opened the scoring in the third minute, heading in from close range after a deflected cross confused Inter’s box. Despite efforts from Inter Milan to equalise, including multiple attempts from Lautaro Martinez and Stefan de Vrij, they were repeatedly denied by Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio and the woodwork.
Fluminense had a second goal ruled out for offside before substitute Hercules sealed the win in stoppage time. The midfielder collected a loose ball, raced into the box, and calmly finished past Inter keeper Yann Sommer.
Led by veteran defender Thiago Silva, the Rio de Janeiro club now moves on to face either Manchester City or Al-Hilal in Orlando on Friday. Fluminense’s progress follows victories by fellow Brazilian teams Flamengo and Botafogo over Chelsea and PSG, respectively, strengthening South America’s presence in the tournament.
Inter Milan entered the competition on shaky ground after a 5-0 loss to PSG in the Champions League final and under the guidance of new coach Cristian Chivu. Despite topping their group, they struggled for consistency and failed to impress against a well-organised Fluminense side. Only around 20,000 spectators were present at the Bank of America Stadium, where high afternoon temperatures added to the challenge.
As Inter exits the tournament, Brazil continues to shine, reminding Europe that South American clubs remain strong contenders on the global stage.
