The U.S. men’s national soccer team started strong in Sunday’s Gold Cup Final, but Mexico came back to claim a 2–1 win and lift their 10th Gold Cup trophy, extending their record in the competition.
The match opened with a quick strike from the U.S. after Sebastian Berhalter set up Chris Richards with a well-placed free kick, giving the Americans a 1–0 lead. However, Mexico responded with pressure and possession, eventually leveling the score through Raul Jimenez, who found the top corner with a left-footed shot that beat goalkeeper Matt Freese.
Despite efforts from U.S. defenders, the ball squeezed through. In the 77th minute, Mexico broke the deadlock when Johan Vasquez sent a header into the box, and Edson Alvarez pounced with a diving touch to send the ball into the net. A VAR check confirmed he was onside, making the goal count.
The U.S. tried to find an equalizer in the closing minutes, with Patrick Agyemang and Alex Freeman coming close, but Mexico held firm. Playing under head coach Javier Aguirre, Mexico brought a full-strength squad and became the first team since 2011 to successfully defend the title. The U.S., missing key players like Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie, aimed for their eighth Gold Cup but will have to wait for another chance.
