Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has responded to public speculation over his recent participation in a charity event where he was seen serving food to the less privileged. The event, held in Imo State and titled Jubilee of Hope, aimed to bridge the gap between the rich and poor by encouraging humility and service among influential Nigerians.
Obi explained via a post on his verified X handle that the act was never intended as a campaign strategy or political message. He said the photos and videos that circulated online were shared by third parties, not by him or his team. He expressed regret that the images had been twisted by critics to suggest political motives.
He described the event as private and reflective of values he has upheld throughout his life. Obi emphasized that true leadership requires service and that acts of compassion should not be seen as unusual or strategic. He noted that respected public figures such as Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Senator Osita Izunaso, and Dr. A.B.C. Orjiako also joined in serving meals at the event.
According to Obi, his presence was meant to support a sincere outreach initiative, not to attract attention. He said he stayed longer at the venue only because many attendees personally asked him to serve them food — a request he found impossible to ignore.
Obi further clarified that his actions reflect who he is outside public life. He mentioned that he sweeps, cleans, and serves guests in his home, underscoring that humility is not a tool for politics but a natural part of his lifestyle.
He ended his statement with a call to all Nigerians, especially leaders and business elites, to embrace service and compassion. He stressed that rebuilding the nation requires inclusion and care for the poor, reminding everyone that dignity should not be a privilege but a right.
