Mrs Funmilayo Ogun, a prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and a governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, has firmly dismissed suggestions that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) poses any real threat to the PDP’s dominance in the state. She stated that those defecting to the ADC will soon return, describing the move as temporary and lacking long-term impact.
Speaking to supporters from all three senatorial zones at her campaign office in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday, Ogun emphasized that the PDP remains the party to beat in the 2026 governorship election. A former Commissioner for Works in the state, she explained that the internal issues that once troubled the party are being resolved, particularly the matter concerning the position of National Secretary. According to her, Senator Samuel Anyanwu will continue in that role, signaling a return to unity within the party’s leadership.
Ogun assured her followers that the National Working Committee of the PDP has strengthened its focus on resolving lingering issues, including those affecting the conclusion of congresses in Ekiti State. She expressed confidence that this would not affect the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) timetable and that the PDP would soon complete its congresses in the state.
Reflecting on her two-year grassroots campaign, Ogun said she has visited every ward and community to consult, reconcile, and mobilize support. She expressed optimism about clinching the party’s ticket and leading the PDP to victory in 2026.
When asked about the wave of defections and the emergence of ADC in Ekiti politics, Ogun dismissed them as insignificant. She maintained that the ADC lacks the time and structure to challenge the PDP successfully, especially with the election drawing near. She insisted that the PDP is far from dead in Ekiti and still enjoys the support of loyal, grassroots members.
Ogun concluded by declaring her resolve to stay in the race until victory is achieved. She reaffirmed her ambition to emerge as the next governor of Ekiti State, adding that by 2026, she intends to be in the government house.
