Oshoala Shuts Down Retirement Talk After WAFCON Victory

Asisat Oshoala clears the air on retirement rumours, confirming she’s still committed to playing for Nigeria after lifting her fourth WAFCON title.

Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala has dismissed widespread rumours suggesting she has ended her international football career. Speaking to reporters in Morocco following Nigeria’s thrilling 3-2 win over the host country in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final, the seasoned striker made it clear that she is still very much part of the national team setup.

The 30-year-old Barcelona forward firmly rejected the speculation, saying, “I don’t know where that came from but agenda must agend. I get it, but I’m not bothered. I’m still here. I’m still playing. I’m still doing my job. That’s what I’m focused on.”

Oshoala, a six-time African Player of the Year, played a key support role for the Super Falcons throughout the tournament. Her international journey began in 2013 and gained global attention in 2014 when she led Nigeria to victory in the African Women’s Championship and starred in the U-20 Women’s World Cup. She remains the only African to score in three consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cups.

Now with four WAFCON titles to her name—2014, 2016, 2018, and 2024—Oshoala continues to cement her legacy as one of the most influential figures in African women’s football.
