City Honors Fallen NYPD Officer Killed in Midtown Office Shooting

Crowds gather as NYPD mourns Officer Didarul Islam, a father of two, killed during a Midtown Manhattan office shooting while working off-duty security.

New York City streets were filled with police officers on Thursday morning as they paid their final respects to Officer Didarul Islam, who was killed during a deadly office building shooting in Midtown Manhattan earlier this week. Islam, 36, was one of four victims who lost their lives when a gunman opened fire inside the building on Monday evening.

Officer Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, was off duty and working security at the time of the attack. The building housed several major organizations, including the NFL headquarters and the investment firm Blackstone. Islam leaves behind his pregnant wife and two young sons.

A viewing for Islam was held at Parkchester Jame Masjid in the Bronx, where NYPD officers in full dress uniform stood four rows deep in solemn tribute. After the viewing, a prayer service was held, followed by a burial at a cemetery in Totowa, New Jersey.

Islam had served as a school safety agent before becoming a patrol officer just under four years ago. He was assigned to a Bronx precinct and lived nearby with his family. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised Islam for his bravery, stating he “made the ultimate sacrifice” and “died as he lived—a hero.”

Mayor Eric Adams, a former NYPD officer, met with Islam’s family and was present for the dignified transfer of his body. He described Islam as a “true blue New Yorker” who represented the spirit of the city through his service.

The shooter was identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas. Authorities say Tamura, who had a history of mental health struggles, began firing in the building’s lobby before moving to another floor and eventually taking his own life.

The tragic loss of Officer Islam has shaken both the city and the nation, prompting discussions about workplace safety and the dangers faced by those in public service.
