Marta proved once again why she is regarded as a football legend as she led Brazil to their ninth Copa América Femenina title with a dramatic comeback win over Colombia in Quito, Ecuador. The 39-year-old forward came off the bench in stoppage time to equalise in the 96th minute, forcing extra time in a match that saw Brazil eventually triumph 5-4 on penalties.
Colombia had looked set for a historic first title after Mayra Ramírez scored in the 88th minute, but Marta’s late goal brought Brazil back into the game. Earlier, Colombia took the lead in the 25th minute through Linda Caicedo, but Brazil responded with a first-half equaliser from Angelina Alonso. Tarciane’s own goal gave Colombia another lead in the 69th minute, only for Amanda Gutierres to level things again.
In extra time, Marta added another goal to make it 4-3, showcasing her trademark brilliance. Colombia struck back through Leicy Santos with a powerful free-kick, sending the match to penalties. Both teams missed two kicks during the initial shootout, leading to sudden death. Jorelyn Carabalí’s miss proved decisive, handing Brazil the title.
This victory adds a fourth Copa América trophy to Marta’s collection, following wins in 2003, 2010, and 2018. Both Brazil and Colombia had already secured spots at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles by reaching the final.
