Governor Alia Cuts Transport Fares for Persons With Disabilities by 50 Percent

Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia slashes transport fares for Persons With Disabilities by half, expanding access and transforming the state’s transport sector.

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has approved a 50 percent reduction in transport fares for Persons With Disabilities across all routes operated by the state-owned Benue Links Nigeria Limited. The directive, which took immediate effect, was confirmed in Makurdi by the company’s General Manager, Comrade Alexander Fanafa.

This move follows the recent signing and domestication of the Disability Act in the state, reinforcing the Governor’s commitment to inclusion and support for vulnerable groups. Fanafa explained that since taking office, the Governor has consistently addressed the transportation needs of residents and other Nigerians who rely on the services of Benue Links.

Among the improvements under Alia’s administration are the construction of drainage and culverts to tackle perennial flooding at the company’s headquarters, as well as the asphalting of the premises. The Governor also boosted the company’s fleet with the donation of 100 buses in November 2023, while the management has since added 10 buses and 10 sedans for taxi operations.

The General Manager highlighted that the fare cut gives Persons With Disabilities not only reduced rates but also preferential treatment when traveling. He added that the Governor’s efforts had influenced private operators in the state to lower their fares, making transport more affordable overall.

Benue Links has recruited over 110 new drivers under the supervision of the Vehicle Inspection Office and FRSC, while also ensuring staff welfare through a minimum wage of N75,000 and prompt payment of gratuities to retirees.

The company currently covers 35 states including Abuja and is preparing to extend services to Ekiti State. It has also introduced online booking, courier, and haulage services, supported by trucks donated by the Governor and additional purchases. Fanafa noted that the intracity bus services have provided relief for workers in Makurdi affected by fuel subsidy removal.

He praised Governor Alia for transforming the transport sector, ensuring easier movement of people, goods, and services at affordable rates, while creating opportunities for growth and inclusion.
