Hamas Urges Rapid Prisoner Exchange as Egypt Hosts Critical Gaza Ceasefire Negotiations

Hamas pushes for immediate hostage-prisoner swap as negotiators convene in Egypt to end Gaza conflict.

Hamas has pressed for an immediate prisoner exchange with Israel as negotiators from both sides arrived in Egypt for pivotal discussions designed to bring the prolonged Gaza conflict to a close.

The talks, prompted by a peace proposal from US President Donald Trump, represent what Egyptian officials and foreign ministers from multiple nations describe as a significant chance to secure a lasting ceasefire in the war that has stretched nearly two years.

A senior Hamas representative, speaking anonymously, told AFP that the organization remains committed to finalizing an agreement that would halt hostilities and initiate prisoner transfers based on prevailing circumstances on the ground.

The renewed diplomatic efforts come after Hamas responded favorably to Trump’s framework, which outlines an end to military operations alongside the release of captives held in Gaza in return for Palestinians detained in Israeli facilities. Under the proposed arrangement, Israel would free 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life terms and over 1,700 Gaza residents arrested since the conflict erupted.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the need for Israel to suspend airstrikes before the Egyptian negotiations, stating during a CBS News interview on Sunday that hostage releases cannot occur amid active military operations.

Negotiators gathered in Sharm El-Sheikh, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voicing optimism that captives could return home within days. An Israeli government representative confirmed that the country’s negotiating team departed Sunday evening, with formal discussions scheduled to commence Monday, one day before the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas assault that ignited the war.

Egyptian authorities verified they would host Hamas representatives to address implementation details and the comprehensive exchange of Israeli detainees and Palestinian prisoners.

The White House announced that Trump dispatched two envoys to Egypt: his son-in-law Jared Kushner and Middle East negotiator Steve Witkoff.

A Palestinian source familiar with Hamas positions revealed that the group has insisted Israel must cease all military activities throughout Gaza, including aerial surveillance and drone operations, and pull forces out of Gaza City. The organization indicated it would likewise suspend its military actions in coordination with Israel’s cessation.

Hamas operatives captured 251 individuals during the October 7 attack, with 47 remaining in Gaza. Israeli military assessments indicate that 25 of those still held have died.
