Nature’s Fury Hits Delta: Wind and Flood Ravage Communities, Residents Count Their Losses

Homes destroyed, shops ruined and lives upended as wind and flooding leave Delta State residents homeless and helpless.

Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State has been left reeling after a destructive combination of strong winds and heavy rain tore through several communities, leaving a trail of destruction in its path. Residents of Ughoton, Jeddo and Ugbokodo are now struggling to recover from the damage, which includes collapsed rooftops, damaged properties and lost livelihoods.

Eyewitness accounts paint a heartbreaking picture of the storm’s impact. A woman from Jeddo identified as Esther shared her ordeal, explaining that her home was badly damaged and most of her belongings were destroyed by floodwater. She spoke with visible frustration and sadness, pointing to the soaked remains of what used to be her living space.

In another part of the community, a family who ran a small shop described how their entire business was wiped out. According to them, the roof of the building was ripped off by powerful winds before the rain started pouring in, soaking everything inside. They said there was no time to save any of their goods, and now they are left with nothing but the bare structure. “We are devastated. We don’t even know where to begin again,” one of the shop owners said with tears in their eyes.

The story is the same for many others in the area, as residents continue to dig through the damage and salvage what little they can. Many of them say this is not the first time they’ve experienced this kind of flooding. It has become a regular threat whenever the rains come, but this time, the damage is much worse.

Local authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the situation, but community members are calling for urgent support to help them recover from the disaster. Many have been left without shelter, clean water or food, and they fear that their suffering may only get worse if help does not arrive soon.

As the skies clear, the people of Ughoton, Jeddo and Ugbokodo are left to face the difficult task of rebuilding, hoping that their voices will be heard and that action will follow quickly.
