Navy Officers’ Wives Lead by Example with Fitness Walk in Abuja

NOWA hosts a fitness walk in Abuja to promote physical and mental health among Navy families, encouraging an active, connected lifestyle.

The Nigerian Navy Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA) organized a fitness health walk on Saturday for the wives of officers and ratings, focusing on improving mental and physical well-being. The event took place at the Naval Unit Parade Ground in Abuja and drew a large turnout, reflecting strong support for healthy living within the Navy community.

The walk aimed to encourage regular movement as a part of everyday life, while also fostering unity and awareness around the benefits of staying active. The President of NOWA, Mrs. Ijeoma Ogalla, praised the participants for showing up in great numbers, calling it a sign of their commitment to prioritizing health. Mrs. Ogalla, who was represented by her deputy, Mrs. Zainab Bassey, emphasized the benefits of walking as a simple but powerful form of exercise.

She explained that walking strengthens the heart, muscles, and bones, improves joint health, and helps manage stress. According to her, just 30 minutes of brisk walking daily can lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and even certain types of cancer. Beyond physical benefits, she highlighted how walking boosts mood, improves sleep, and supports mental health by reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Mrs. Ogalla noted that the event was about more than just fitness. It was a way to send a message—that health should be a daily priority. She described the walk as a small but meaningful step toward lasting lifestyle changes. By walking together, the group showed the power of community support in creating healthy habits.

She encouraged the women to continue walking regularly, stressing that it doesn’t require any special gear or gym membership. She thanked them for being part of the event and reminded them that their participation sets an example for others to follow.
