Amaechi Quits APC, Slams Government Over State of the Nation

Rotimi Amaechi quits APC, says Nigeria is in ruins, blames inflation, poverty, and electoral manipulation by INEC and the ruling party.

Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC). He announced on Wednesday during an interview in Abuja at the unveiling of the African Democratic Congress (ADC)’s interim executive.

Amaechi described Nigeria as completely destroyed, blaming worsening poverty, skyrocketing inflation, and lack of food as signs of a failed system. He accused both the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of working together to hijack the upcoming elections, claiming the federal government is more focused on rigging votes than solving national problems.

He confirmed that his resignation from the APC took place on Tuesday night, expressing surprise that the party didn’t expel him earlier despite his clear warnings to stop inviting him to meetings. According to him, remaining in a group where most members were involved in corruption without speaking out made no sense.

Asked about his lack of support for the current government under President Bola Tinubu, Amaechi stated that he never believed Tinubu was fit to lead Nigeria. He pointed to the sharp decline in the value of the naira, saying that during the Buhari administration, a dollar exchanged for ₦460, while it now hovers around ₦1,580.

He added that the worsening conditions have made some Nigerians wish for Buhari’s return, highlighting a pattern where each new government turns out worse than the last. Amaechi dismissed suggestions that the exchange rate crisis might be a deliberate policy, stating that any leadership that ignores the people’s suffering has failed.

On claims that he may be overambitious, he replied, “I have the right to be ambitious. I am not overambitious.”

Amaechi also stressed that Nigeria needs more than just another political party. He called for a people-driven movement capable of restoring hope and pushing for a complete overhaul of the system.
