A 26-year-old man identified as John Uba, who previously escaped from police custody, has been rearrested by the Osun State Amotekun Corps following another robbery incident in Osogbo. Uba, who is described as a serial offender, was caught around midnight on Thursday, April 17, 2024, after residents in the Fiwasaye area raised an alarm during an active robbery. The corps revealed that the suspect had dispossessed locals of their mobile phones and other valuables before operatives moved in swiftly to apprehend him.
According to Amotekun Corps Commandant, Adekunle Omoyele, a follow-up investigation confirmed that Uba had escaped from the Ota-Efun Police Division, where he was previously held for a similar offense. The suspect admitted to being a repeat offender and has now been handed back to the same police division for further questioning and legal processing.
On the same day, another suspect, 28-year-old Aderemi Sheriff, was also taken into custody after allegedly stealing electrical cables worth over five million naira near the Hammed Omidiran University area. Sheriff, who had served time before, confessed that he turned to cable theft after his marijuana trade failed. Authorities believe he was involved in a violent incident last year where a gang of vandals stormed a steel rolling company and exchanged gunfire with Amotekun operatives before fleeing. The Commandant confirmed Sheriff’s case is being prepared for court.
In a separate operation, three young men were arrested after breaking into a residential property within Osogbo’s Government Reservation Area. The suspects—Idowu Tajudeen, 27, Bamanga Joffrey, 24, and Femi Adeniyi, 22—were caught at the crime scene while attempting to steal a water pumping machine and other household items. All three have been detained and are expected to face charges soon.
The Amotekun Corps emphasized their ongoing efforts to protect the community and reiterated that each of the suspects will be prosecuted accordingly, as investigations continue.
