Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy Senate President and representative of Kano North Senatorial District, has confirmed the award of 300 domestic scholarships for postgraduate students across Kano State. The announcement was made during an interview screening session for prospective beneficiaries in Kano.
He stated that the scholarships would be awarded strictly on merit. Senator Barau insisted that the selection process must remain fair and transparent, with no room for favoritism or personal influence. He urged the interview panel—comprising academics and professionals—to select only the most qualified candidates, regardless of personal connections or preferences.
According to Senator Barau, the scholarship initiative is part of his ongoing investment in education, aimed at accelerating national development. He explained that while previous scholarships supported students studying abroad, this phase focuses on local institutions with strong reputations, including Bayero University, University of Ibadan, and Obafemi Awolowo University.
The courses covered under the scholarship program include Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Materials Technology, Information Technology, Database Management, Geophysics, Agriculture, Oil Exploration, and Climate Studies. Senator Barau emphasized that these fields are critical to solving many of the country’s current challenges and positioning it for future growth.
He described education as the foundation of every successful society and noted that development is not the government’s responsibility alone. He called on individuals, families, and institutions to contribute to building a strong educational system. By supporting students in relevant disciplines, he believes the region can produce homegrown experts capable of driving innovation and development.
Senator Barau concluded by reminding the panel that the integrity of the process must be protected. He stressed that he has no personal stake in who receives the scholarships, and that only the most deserving candidates should be selected.
