The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the temporary closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu for essential runway repairs. A significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a crucial section of the runway has made the emergency closure necessary. According to a statement issued by Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the repairs are scheduled to begin on April 22 and conclude by May 6, 2025.
During this period, no flights will be allowed to take off or land at the airport. Instead, all flights will be redirected to nearby airports to ensure passenger safety. FAAN has emphasized that this closure is in line with Nigerian civil aviation regulations and is part of the authority’s ongoing efforts to modernize airport facilities.
FAAN has apologized for the sudden and unexpected announcement, urging the public and stakeholders to cooperate during this time.
