FG Clears 200,000 Passport Backlogs and Pays ₦28bn Debt Without Extra Funding

Nigeria clears 200k passport backlogs, settles ₦28bn debt with no extra funding. Minister credits tech, planning, and bold reforms.

The Federal Government has successfully processed over 200,000 delayed passport applications and cleared ₦28 billion in legacy debt, without relying on any additional funding from the national budget. This was disclosed by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during a keynote address at the Access Bank Guest Lecture Series in Lagos.

Speaking at the event themed “Dare to Dream, Dare to Innovate,” the minister emphasized the importance of purpose-driven leadership and early intervention in solving national issues. He explained that the ministry’s achievements were made possible through detailed planning, innovation, and the use of technology.

Among the notable improvements were the introduction of an e-visa system, contactless passport renewal services for Nigerians living abroad, and enhanced passenger tracking tools. These changes have contributed to faster processing times and better security measures.

Tunji-Ojo also addressed the condition of Nigeria’s correctional centres. He expressed concern that more than 4,000 inmates remain in custody simply because they cannot afford fines as low as ₦50,000. He described this situation as a moral failure, stating that no society should punish poverty more severely than criminal behavior.

Efforts are now underway to secure the release of these inmates through partnerships with private donors. In addition, the ministry is working to transform correctional facilities from punishment-focused institutions into centres for rehabilitation. Planned initiatives include digital case monitoring, vocational training, and improved living standards.

The minister’s approach was praised by Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Chairman of Access Holdings, who said that real innovation is driven by bold ideas, not big budgets. He applauded Tunji-Ojo for demonstrating what true public service can achieve.

The event brought together stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to discuss practical ways to drive national development through leadership, technology, and collaboration.

Ending his speech, Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to act with purpose and chase excellence. He challenged institutions and individuals alike to move from being known for potential to being recognized for performance, saying, “It’s time to refine our genius, not just export it.”
