Funke Akindele Opens Up About Personal Struggles and Therapy

Actress Funke Akindele shares her emotional journey and how seeking therapy helped her overcome personal struggles and grief.

In a candid moment on Chude’s talk show, actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele revealed the emotional burden she carried silently for a long time. She described the moment she realised she could no longer handle it alone, saying, “I told myself, I can’t continue like this. You need to speak.”

Funke shared the deep emotional toll she experienced after losing her mother and facing significant personal challenges. Despite her belief in therapy, she never sought it out, thinking she had to stay strong for others. She explained, “I was always trying to be strong,” but the pressures from society, family, and her grief began to overwhelm her.

Though she suffered quietly, she hesitated to open up about her struggles, fearing judgment and the risk of others gossiping. However, when the weight became too much to bear, Funke decided to speak to a therapist, and the experience proved transformative. “Things I couldn’t tell people out there, I spoke to my therapist. And I’m better.”

Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of seeking help when needed, breaking the silence around mental health, and acknowledging that it’s okay to ask for support.
