Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has openly criticized President Bola Tinubu for commissioning the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project despite its minimal progress. The road, expected to stretch 700 kilometers from Lagos Island to Calabar, has reportedly achieved less than five percent completion.
In a statement shared on his official X account, Rhodes-Vivour questioned the rationale behind celebrating such an early stage of the project. He argued that launching a barely-started project and then promoting it as a major achievement misleads the public. He further dismissed the claims that 30 kilometers had been completed, describing them as false and part of a growing pattern of misinformation.
He compared the situation to a previous incident where the finance minister presented inaccurate statistics abroad, only for those claims to be corrected by the Central Bank of Nigeria days later. He said the administration continues to embarrass the country with these misleading narratives.
Rhodes-Vivour also raised concerns about the growing insecurity across the country, saying the government appears more focused on promoting individuals than addressing national challenges. He blamed poor governance and political distractions for the country’s deepening economic struggles, stating that many Nigerians are worse off now than they were nearly ten years ago.
