Gunmen Attack Benue Community, Six Killed, Others Injured

Gunmen reportedly killed six people and injured many in a fresh attack on a Benue community near the Ebonyi border.

At least six people have been confirmed dead following a violent attack on the Ezza community in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State. The incident happened around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and involved armed men suspected to be from the neighbouring Effium community in Ebonyi State.

According to a resident who asked not to be named, the attackers arrived unexpectedly while people were going about their daily routines. They began shooting indiscriminately, causing panic and chaos in the area. Many residents were caught off guard, and several were hit by bullets.

The source described the attack as completely unprovoked, pointing out the deep shock felt by the community, especially during the Easter holiday. He expressed concern over the safety of women and children, many of whom were forced to run into nearby bushes for safety instead of celebrating the season at home.

At the time of reporting, the attackers were said to still be present in the area, continuing to fire shots and loot food and valuables. The ongoing tension has made it difficult for residents to return to their homes or access help.

Attempts to contact the Benue State Police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Catherine Anene, were unsuccessful as she could not be reached for comments.

The longstanding conflict between the Ezza and Effium communities has persisted for years despite peace efforts. This latest attack adds to a growing list of violent incidents linked to the unresolved crisis.
