Kaigama Presses Federal Government for Fresh Action as Security Crisis Deepens

With Nigeria's Chrism Mass 2025 as the backdrop, Archbishop Kaigama urges President Tinubu and security agencies to act decisively before it’s too late.

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, has issued a heartfelt plea to the Federal Government and security agencies, demanding a total rethink of how Nigeria’s worsening insecurity is being handled. Speaking on Tuesday during the 2025 Chrism Mass held at Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Pro-Cathedral in Abuja, the Archbishop expressed deep concern over the continued loss of innocent lives, particularly the spate of recent killings in Plateau State.

Archbishop Kaigama emphasized the urgent need for security agencies to stop working in silos and instead collaborate more closely in their operations. He insisted that the perpetrators of these violent attacks are not invisible and can indeed be identified and brought to justice. He expressed cautious hope in President Tinubu’s promises to address the crisis, pledging the Church’s support if genuine steps are taken.

While acknowledging the power of prayer, Kaigama made it clear that spiritual interventions must be matched with practical, transparent leadership. He called on public officials to rise to the challenge of governance by prioritizing honesty and accountability. The Archbishop argued that what Nigerians are asking for isn’t excessive—just basic rights like food, safety, quality education, functioning healthcare, and reliable transportation.

Referencing educational systems in the UK and US where Catholic schools often receive government support and offer free education, Kaigama questioned why similar efforts couldn’t be replicated in Nigeria. He pointed out that Nigerian students thrive in these systems abroad, suggesting there’s no excuse for the lack of progress back home.

Kaigama also commended the spirit of ordinary Nigerians, who despite the weight of poverty, hunger, and insecurity, still find a way to celebrate Easter with joy and resilience. He described Nigerians as remarkably enduring and called on the nation’s leaders to reflect deeply, lead selflessly, and respond to the people’s simple needs—chief among them, safety.

He urged his fellow clergy to resist the temptation of self-enrichment and remain true to their calling, reminding them that spiritual leadership should stand in stark contrast to the self-serving attitude often seen in politics. Concluding his message, Archbishop Kaigama called for a Jubilee of Hope and encouraged all Nigerians, regardless of faith, to embrace justice, unity, and repentance as a shared path forward toward healing and national renewal.
