Lagos Moves to Tackle Flooding with Major Drainage Projects

Lagos government begins 4.2km drainage works to reduce flooding, warns against illegal structures on flood channels.

The Lagos State Government has pledged to reduce flooding by rebuilding drainage systems and preventing illegal structures along water paths. This commitment was restated by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during a site visit to a 4.2-kilometre concrete drainage project running through Ikeja and Kosofe local councils.

The project, which started in 2024, is being executed in phases. Wahab said the Sheraton to Ojota section is already 45 percent completed, and the full drainage system will be ready within 24 months. He described the drain as a 25-metre-wide trapezoidal structure that will flow under the new bridge in the Maryland area, where different water channels from Ogba and Sheraton converge.

The Ministry of Infrastructure is also working on road construction alongside the drainage channel. Wahab stressed the importance of completing the project on time and warned residents against blocking drainage paths.

During another stop at the Adisa Balogun Channel in Agboyi Ketu, Wahab ordered immediate notices to be served to people attempting to build on the drainage route. He emphasized that illegal structures will not be tolerated and called on the public to respect drainage alignments to prevent future disasters.
