Teen Caught With Gun in Akwa Ibom Claims It Belongs to Landlord

An 18-year-old in Akwa Ibom was arrested with a locally made pistol. His explanation? The gun was collateral for a ₦5,000 loan from his landlord.

Police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested 18-year-old Amanam Bassey Abraham for allegedly possessing a locally made pistol. The arrest took place in Akpautong Village, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, after officers received credible intelligence and acted swiftly. According to a statement released by the State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, the arrest was carried out around 4:00 PM on April 18, 2025.

Upon searching the suspect, officers discovered the illegal firearm in his possession. During questioning, Bassey told the police that the weapon belonged to his landlord, who had allegedly handed it over as collateral for a ₦5,000 loan. He claimed he was planning to give the pistol to his father for safekeeping.

The police have launched an investigation to track down the said landlord, whose identity remains unknown at the time of the report. The Commissioner of Police praised the prompt action of the officers involved and restated the command’s dedication to ensuring the safety of residents across Akwa Ibom State.
