Late NTA Deputy Director’s Family Donates Rare Music Archive to MCSN

Kola Muyi’s family donates vintage tapes and records to MCSN, preserving Nigeria’s rich musical history for future generations.

The family of the late Mr. Kola Muyi, a former Deputy Director of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), has handed over his rare personal music archive to the Musical Copyright Society Nigeria Ltd/Gte (MCSN). The materials include a wide range of vintage media such as vinyl records, audio cassettes, and VHS tapes.

Mrs. Kemi Muyi-Adeniyi, daughter of the late broadcaster and Director of Content and Operations at Lagos State Television (LTV), presented the collection on behalf of the family. She explained that they chose MCSN as the most suitable organization to care for and preserve the legacy, rather than allow the items to deteriorate over time.

Receiving the archive, MCSN CEO, Mr. Mayo Ayilaran, thanked the Muyi family for trusting the Society with what he described as an important piece of Nigeria’s music history. He promised that the donated items would be carefully maintained and made available for public access to support research, education, and cultural appreciation.

Mr. Ayilaran reiterated MCSN’s role as a Collective Management Organisation committed to protecting the rights of Nigerian musicians. He also highlighted that under the Nigerian Copyright Act, creators’ rights remain protected during their lifetime and for 70 years after death. This means that families and legal heirs can continue to benefit from royalties when their works are used or violated, both locally and internationally.

He encouraged other families and individuals in possession of historically valuable music materials to consider donating to the Society, noting that such contributions would help preserve the country’s musical legacy and ensure that the stories of its pioneers remain alive for generations to come.
