Man Accused of Killing Ex-Wife’s Fiancé Over Marriage Dispute in Niger State

A man in Niger State allegedly led an attack on his ex-wife’s new partner, who later died from the injuries. Police are investigating.

A man identified as Alhaji Yikangi, a resident of Yikangi Chikan village in Gbako Local Government Area of Niger State, has been accused of leading an attack that resulted in the death of Muhammad Ma’aba, who was reportedly in a relationship with Yikangi’s former wife, Fatima Suleiman.

Ma’aba, from Fujeregi village, was said to be preparing to marry Fatima after her separation from Alhaji Yikangi. Despite reportedly divorcing Fatima three times, Yikangi allegedly objected to her plans to remarry.

According to police reports, the attack took place between Saganuwa and Fujeregi on April 17, 2025, around 2:00 p.m. Muhammad Ma’aba was reportedly ambushed and beaten into a coma by a group allegedly led by Yikangi. He was being taken to Lemu General Hospital when he died from his injuries.

The spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, Superintendent Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident. He stated that investigations are ongoing and efforts are underway to arrest the suspects who fled the scene.

Police have yet to confirm how many people were involved in the attack, but have assured the public that justice will be pursued.
