Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic, formerly of Manchester United, sharply criticized Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, labeling him one of the club’s least impressive goalkeepers in its history.
The remarks came during a press conference on Wednesday, as Matic responded to Onana’s claim that Manchester United was significantly superior to Lyon. The verbal exchange has intensified anticipation for the Europa League quarter-final first leg set for Thursday.
Matic questioned Onana’s credibility, suggesting that legendary goalkeepers like David De Gea, Peter Schmeichel, or Edwin van der Sar would carry more weight with such statements. He emphasized Onana’s statistically poor record at United as a reason for restraint in his comments. Onana, who joined United from Inter Milan for approximately £47 million and won the FA Cup in his debut season, fired back on social media, subtly highlighting Matic’s lack of trophies during his time at United while stressing his respect for other clubs.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim came to Onana’s defense, describing his goalkeeper’s comments as respectful and aimed at boosting team morale ahead of the crucial match.
