The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has expressed appreciation for the health workforce retention policy that Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, implemented. The NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu, commended the policy during a reception in Uyo. The event at the Doctors’ Mess celebrated newly appointed state officials, including commissioners and senior assistants in the medical and insurance sectors.
Prof. Audu acknowledged the policy’s significant role in ensuring the welfare of medical staff, which he believes is crucial for retaining healthcare workers. He noted that while improving healthcare infrastructure is important, maintaining the well-being and unity of medical personnel is equally vital.
In addition, Prof. Audu urged the governor to ensure uniform healthcare standards across all state facilities, particularly in teaching hospitals. He emphasised that these hospitals must meet tertiary care standards, with qualified staff, adequate facilities, and functional equipment.
The Akwa Ibom State NMA Chairman, Dr. Aniekan Peter, also praised Governor Eno’s efforts. He highlighted the governor’s appointment of three medical professionals as commissioners, calling them ambassadors of the NMA. Dr. Peter also shared the success of the Health Centre Initiative, which was introduced earlier in the year and has positively impacted many state residents. He assured continued support for the governor’s efforts to enhance the welfare of medical personnel and the health of the state’s population.
