Obey Etok-Chima Speaks on Grief, Fame and Life as a Single Mum in Nollywood

Sexy Nollywood star says young men won't stop chasing her, seeks a caring partner for her and her kids

Nollywood actress Obey Etok-Chima has opened up about her personal struggles following the tragic loss of her husband and father in 2024. The emotional weight of losing both loved ones within months was further compounded when her mother-in-law also passed away shortly after. Despite the grief, she has found some comfort in her acting career.

Obey recalled getting the heartbreaking news of her husband’s death while on a movie set. She wasn’t able to see him before he passed and had to quickly return home, only to resume work shortly after. The loss of her father a few months later added to the pain. She described both men as loving and kind, with memories that continue to bring her comfort.

Now a single mother of four, the actress said her main priority is raising her children. She admitted that although she is trying to stay strong, she longs for a partner who will care for both her and her kids. “I don’t know, but I need someone to take care of my kids and I,” she said.

Since becoming widowed, Obey revealed that she’s been getting an overwhelming amount of attention from younger men. She said she receives countless messages, especially from “cute guys,” but chooses not to respond. “It’s getting worse. I received so many messages this morning. They won’t let me be. This is because I am a sexy mama,” she said, laughing.

Known for her breakout role as Sandra in Wale Adenuga’s Super Story: No Pain, No Gain, Obey remains passionate about her craft. She said acting brings her joy and helps her cope. She also described herself as a natural performer who enjoys staying true to herself in her roles.

Reflecting on her childhood, she shared that she grew up a tomboy, always wearing shorts and playing football with boys. Even now, she prefers jeans and still enjoys the company of men over women. “My mum always reminded me of my sexuality. Raising children made me more feminine, but I still wear my jeans and shorts more than anything else,” she said.

Despite her hardships, Obey Etok-Chima continues to push forward with strength, balancing motherhood and her Nollywood career while navigating the challenges of life after loss.
