President Bola Tinubu is currently engaged in a private meeting with National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu and Chief of Defence Staff General Chris Musa at the State House in Abuja. This closed-door session, which comes after the President’s return from a 19-day trip to Europe, aims to address the escalating security crisis in various parts of the country.
The security situation has worsened, particularly in Plateau and Benue states, where violent attacks by suspected foreign herders have claimed the lives of hundreds and displaced many residents. These gunmen have caused extensive damage to local communities, with reports indicating that some attackers kill civilians, force survivors to flee, and occupy the affected areas. The violence has left the public both at home and abroad deeply concerned.
In the last two weeks, the death toll in Plateau and Benue has reached nearly 200. Between March 28 and April 14, 2025, over 100 fatalities were reported in Bokkos and Bassa local government areas, with attacks in Zike, Kimakpa, and other communities resulting in significant casualties. Further reports on April 19 from Governor Hyacinth Alia highlighted additional attacks that led to 20 more deaths in Logo and Ukum local government areas. The governor has raised suspicions that the attackers may not be Nigerians, as they reportedly do not speak local languages.
As the meeting progresses, it is unclear whether additional security and intelligence officials have joined, but it is hoped that the discussions will lead to effective measures to alleviate the growing fears and challenges faced by affected communities.
