Real Madrid have officially completed the signing of Spanish defender Alvaro Carreras from Benfica on a six-year contract, marking another major step in the club’s summer rebuild. The 22-year-old left-back, who once played in Madrid’s youth ranks before moving to Manchester United in 2020, rejoins the La Liga side after a reported €50 million transfer deal.
The club confirmed the acquisition on Monday, stating that Carreras is now under contract until June 30, 2031. His return comes after a successful spell at Benfica, where he made 62 appearances and scored five goals. Initially loaned from Manchester United, he joined the Portuguese side permanently in 2024 for €6 million.
Carreras becomes Madrid’s fourth major signing of the summer following the arrivals of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, and Franco Mastantuono. The combined transfer spending for the quartet is estimated to have reached €170 million as the club looks to bounce back from a disappointing season.
Real Madrid ended the previous campaign without any major silverware. Following that outcome, head coach Carlo Ancelotti left his role and was replaced by Xabi Alonso. Although Alonso managed to guide the team to the Club World Cup semi-finals, they suffered a crushing 4-0 defeat to eventual runners-up Paris Saint-Germain.
Madrid’s latest transfer moves signal a clear intent to rebuild and reclaim their dominance both domestically and in Europe.
