Senator Jarigbe Stands Firm with PDP, Pushes for Ogoja State and Grassroots Progress

Senator Jarigbe refuses to defect from PDP, backs Ogoja statehood, and urges locals to support Cross River’s APC government for grassroots development.

Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe has restated his full commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dismissing any plans to leave the party. He made this clear while addressing members of the Cross River State Journalists Forum (CROSSJOF) during their visit to his home in Abuja.

The senator, who represents Cross River North, explained that his loyalty lies with his constituents, not political trends. He said that his people have made it clear they want to stay in the PDP, and he has no intention of abandoning them. He emphasized that politics is rooted in local support and that defection without the backing of one’s community holds no value.

While avoiding criticism of others who have switched parties, he noted that such decisions might reflect the desires of their own supporters. Jarigbe encouraged residents of Cross River State to support the APC-led government despite being in the opposition, stressing the need for unity to ensure that democratic benefits reach the grassroots. He warned against unnecessary distractions that could slow down governance.

He also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to approve the creation of Ogoja State. He pointed out that Ogoja is the only former province in the country without state status, describing its creation as both timely and historic.

As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Gas, Jarigbe highlighted ongoing infrastructure and development projects across his senatorial district. He noted that every ward has at least one key project such as water supply systems, electricity, school renovations, or improved road networks. He cited the example of the Boki-Abakpa road, which was previously in terrible shape but has now been fixed through his intervention. The road leading to his village, once unpassable, is now motorable.

He also mentioned initiatives like scholarships, bursaries, and youth empowerment schemes. Some students have been sent abroad under scholarships funded by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF). More bursaries are set to be distributed next month, and financial aid for small businesses is ongoing.

Speaking on his legislative work, he listed a number of bills he has sponsored, including one to establish a Federal Medical Centre, which has passed its second reading and a public hearing. He explained that although other proposals, like the creation of a Federal University of Technology and a Polytechnic in Ogoja, were rejected—possibly due to opposition party politics—he remains committed to pushing them forward.

Senator Jarigbe closed by reaffirming his focus on delivering results and staying loyal to the people of Cross River North, no matter the political climate.
