Senator Solomon Adeola, representing Ogun West in the National Assembly, has awarded scholarships and bursaries to a total of 3,881 students from tertiary institutions across Ogun State. This initiative, aimed at providing financial support for education, was carried out in Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area of the state.
The scholarship scheme, which is part of Adeola’s broader effort to improve access to education, will provide N200,000 each to the selected students, while the bursary recipients will receive N100,000 each. These students, nominated through a rigorous selection process by the Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola Scholarship Board, represent various institutions from across Nigeria.
In addition to the scholarships and bursaries, the senator also distributed laptops to 700 secondary school students who had participated in an ICT training program organized by him. Adeola emphasized that the scholarship initiative was designed to support bright yet financially disadvantaged students in accessing quality education, stressing that education is a fundamental right for every child.
Adeola, who serves as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, noted that the program aligns with the Nigerian Education Loan Fund scheme launched by President Tinubu’s administration. He further assured that next year, bursaries will no longer be offered, as the focus will shift entirely to scholarships, urging all students in Ogun West and beyond to seize the opportunity.
Professor Tope Popoola, Chairman of the scholarship board, shared that this year’s program received over 8,000 applications from more than 100 tertiary institutions nationwide. The scholarship program has grown significantly since its launch, with the number of beneficiaries increasing from 1,700 in its inaugural edition to 3,881 this year, reflecting its expansion to include students from Ogun East and Central, as well as beyond Ogun State.
