Nigerian comedian Seyi Law has publicly ruled out the possibility of ever supporting Peter Obi in any future political contest. During a recent appearance on the Teju Babyface show, he opened up about the personal reasons behind his stance, pointing directly to the actions of some supporters of the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.
Seyi Law, who backed President Bola Tinubu during the last election, explained that the decision to distance himself from Obi was rooted in his painful experiences with members of the “Obidient” movement. He accused some individuals within the group of crossing a deeply personal line by verbally attacking his wife and children online. According to him, this crossed a boundary that he cannot forgive.
He expressed deep disappointment in Peter Obi’s silence on the matter, claiming the politician failed to call his supporters to order or acknowledge the alleged harassment. For Seyi Law, this silence was just as damaging as the insults themselves. He said no apology or achievement from Obi could ever reverse his position.
The comedian compared the behaviour of some Obi supporters to that of a cult, claiming the group suppresses free thought and lashes out at those with differing opinions. He insisted that when political loyalty spills into personal attacks on innocent family members, it becomes something he cannot tolerate or forget.
Seyi Law also made it clear that while he generally doesn’t hold grudges, anything that involves harm or disrespect towards his wife, children, or mother has a lasting emotional effect on him. He repeated that no amount of political goodwill from Obi would ever be enough to change his mind.
In his words, even if Peter Obi were to embody the most virtuous qualities imaginable, including those of a religious figure, he still would not earn his support. The comedian wrapped up his comments by defending his right to independent thinking and rejecting what he sees as a toxic political culture among some members of Obi’s base.
