Comrade Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, the National President of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU). The announcement was made by Dr. Mokolo Hassan, NASU President, during a recent JAC meeting held in Abuja.
Dr. Hassan hailed the appointment, noting that it was long-awaited and expressed full confidence in Ibrahim’s ability to effectively lead the committee. While the details of his tenure were not disclosed, Dr. Hassan emphasized the critical role of unity between the two unions in addressing shared challenges.
In response, members of the committee assured Ibrahim of their unwavering support and cooperation, reaffirming their commitment to working together to enhance the welfare of university workers. The Joint Action Committee has played a pivotal role in negotiating with the federal government on issues impacting non-teaching staff at Nigerian universities, particularly regarding wages, working conditions, and pension matters.
The meeting’s major discussion point was the way forward regarding the N50 billion Earned Allowances recently announced by the Ministry of Education. This sum is set to be distributed among the various university-based unions. Additionally, the committee reviewed the renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement and presented SSANU’s yearly calendar.
The leadership of JAC is shared between SSANU and NASU, with Comrade Samson Ugwoke handing over the position to NASU at the end of his five-year tenure.
