Swiss Woman Kidnapped from Her Home in Niger Just Months After Similar Abduction

A Swiss woman was kidnapped late Sunday in Niger’s Agadez city, just months after an Austrian citizen was taken. Authorities are urgently investigating.

A Swiss woman has been kidnapped from her residence in Agadez city, located in northern Niger, late Sunday night, according to confirmations from Swiss authorities and local officials. The Swiss foreign ministry acknowledged the abduction, stating it had received information about the incident and that its diplomatic mission in Niamey is already in contact with local authorities to gather more details. The victim’s identity has not yet been released, and no group has claimed responsibility for the abduction.

General Ibra Boulama Issa, governor of Agadez state, confirmed the incident and described the victim as a foreign woman of Swiss nationality. The kidnapping reportedly occurred in the same city where an Austrian woman was abducted just three months ago, on January 11. Authorities have not disclosed whether the two cases are connected, but the repetition of such events in the same region has sparked serious concerns about the safety of foreign nationals and the growing insecurity in parts of Niger.

Efforts are ongoing to clarify the circumstances of the latest kidnapping, and Swiss officials are closely monitoring the situation. The case has drawn international attention, placing additional pressure on local security agencies to secure her release and improve protective measures for foreigners living in the area.
