Senate President Godswill Akpabio has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for restoring hope to a country he described as previously decayed. Speaking during a joint sitting of the National Assembly held to commemorate Democracy Day, Akpabio credited the president with strengthening Nigeria’s democratic values and national direction.
He described Tinubu as a veteran in the fight for democracy, praising his long-standing commitment and sacrifice. Akpabio noted that Tinubu’s appearance in the National Assembly represented more than a constitutional duty; it symbolized the success of a long and difficult democratic journey.
He referred to the National Assembly as a stronghold of democracy and welcomed the president not just as Nigeria’s leader, but as someone who had helped shape the country’s political landscape. Addressing Tinubu directly, he described him as a compatriot and a lifelong senator, stating that the chamber was proud to receive one of its own who had contributed significantly to building the democratic structure the nation depends on today.
Akpabio reminded attendees that the day was not just a political ceremony, but a time to honour the resilience of ordinary Nigerians. He emphasized that the celebration recognized the courage of citizens who continued to choose democracy over violence, despite betrayals and personal sacrifices. According to him, the strength of Nigeria’s democracy lies in the people’s faith, which has withstood physical harm, silence, and oppression, yet remained focused on peaceful change through the ballot box.
