President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ridiculed the internal troubles within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), saying it gave him pleasure to see the opposition in disorder. He made the remarks on Thursday during a joint session of the National Assembly held to mark Democracy Day.
Addressing lawmakers, the president welcomed former opposition members who recently joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing their move as a step in the right direction. He told them the party’s doors would remain open, even as he aimed pointed remarks at opposition leaders struggling to manage internal divisions.
Tinubu said parties losing members should look inward rather than blame external forces, suggesting they review their structures instead of imagining threats that don’t exist. In a more sarcastic tone, he noted that he would neither advise them nor help them fix their issues.
His comments come at a time when several members of the PDP and LP have reportedly voiced frustration, with some exploring new political alliances. The session drew mixed reactions from lawmakers. APC members showed approval, while members of the opposition appeared uncomfortable.
Though Tinubu has previously spoken about the value of having a strong opposition in a democratic system, his latest remarks show little concern for their current struggles.
