Valentine Ikechukwu, a 16-year-old Nigerian residing in the UK, tragically drowned while swimming in a lake at Colwick Country Park on April 30. Nottinghamshire Police confirmed that Valentine encountered difficulties while in the water, prompting an immediate emergency response. Emergency services were contacted at 5:20 pm, and a search operation was launched with the help of the police’s underwater team and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. His body was found just before 8:00 pm.
Detective Inspector Gail Routledge, in a statement, extended support to the grieving family, noting the heart-wrenching loss of such a young life. “Our thoughts are with Valentine’s family and friends during this difficult time,” Routledge expressed, adding that the investigation continues to determine the circumstances of the incident. She also emphasized the dangers of swimming in open water, stressing the severe risks.
Valentine’s family described him as a respectful and well-liked young man, and they are devastated by his loss. They have asked for privacy as they process their grief. The family paid tribute to their son, stating, “Long live Valentine, forever 16,” and shared their sadness at the sudden loss of a beloved friend and student from Nottingham College.
Authorities confirmed that Valentine’s death is not suspicious, and the case is being prepared for review by the Coroner.
