CAN Appeals for Unity Amid Middle-Belt Crisis

CAN calls for unity as violence grips Nigeria’s Middle Belt, urging citizens to support peace efforts and avoid actions that could harm national stability.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged all Nigerians to avoid actions that could deepen instability, as violence persists in the Middle Belt region. States such as Plateau, Benue, and Gombe continue to experience brutal attacks, leaving communities devastated.

Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the CAN President, highlighted the pressing need for unity and dialogue to address the widespread security challenges. He reaffirmed the association’s strong commitment to advocating for the safety and dignity of affected people, vowing not to relent in the fight for justice and peace.

The cleric reminded the public of CAN’s previous condemnations of senseless killings across the country. He also revealed that the organisation has supported victims directly by visiting affected areas, offering condolences, and distributing relief materials. More efforts, including upcoming visits, are planned to sustain this support.

CAN appealed to Nigerians of all faiths and backgrounds to back peace-building efforts. The statement called for responsible actions, warning against remarks or conduct that could escalate tensions. Unity and collaboration, through platforms like the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), were encouraged as pathways towards practical solutions. International stakeholders like the United States were also acknowledged as key partners in fostering dialogue.

The association reiterated its unwavering dedication to promoting peace and urged citizens to act with love and understanding. Archbishop Okoh emphasized that national strength lies in unity and called for collective action to nurture a peaceful and prosperous future.
