Nigeria Advances Policy on Responsible AI Use in Media

Nigeria's government is creating a policy for ethical AI use in media, addressing innovation, press freedom, and national security. Learn more about their strategy.

The federal government is developing a national framework to promote the ethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the media sector. Alhaji Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, revealed this in a statement marking World Press Freedom Day. He emphasized that the initiative ensures technological advancements do not compromise ethics, press freedom, or national security.

Highlighting the media’s critical role in fostering informed communities, the minister called for unity among the government, media, and civil society to preserve freedom of expression while advancing technology responsibly. He underscored President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s dedication to safeguarding a free and accountable press as a foundation of democracy, stating that a vibrant media empowers citizens to voice their opinions and hold leaders accountable.

The minister expressed concern over the misuse of AI, particularly through misinformation, deepfakes, and divisive campaigns, which threaten societal harmony. He stressed the necessity of protecting the media as a gatekeeper of truth, urging vigilance to prevent platforms from being exploited by elements seeking to disrupt national security or public trust.

He reiterated that the forthcoming policy would support media innovation while combating technological abuse. By ensuring responsible AI use, the government seeks to promote a balanced information ecosystem and preserve democratic values.
