Senate President Godswill Akpabio has paid heartfelt tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a principled and committed leader who gave his all in service to Nigeria. Akpabio spoke during a solemn Federal Executive Council (FEC) session convened by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja to honour Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, in London after a brief illness.
Speaking at the Council Chambers, Akpabio acknowledged that while no leader is perfect, Buhari stood out for his firm principles and deep dedication to the nation. “He gave everything he had to a country that asked everything of him,” Akpabio said. “President Muhammadu Buhari was not perfect — no leader is — but he was a very principled man.”
The tribute session brought together senior government officials, ministers, and lawmakers, reflecting on Buhari’s long journey as both a military Head of State and a civilian President who served from 2015 to 2023. His contributions were recalled with respect and gratitude.
President Tinubu, who ordered the special sitting, described Buhari’s passing as a painful national loss. He extended condolences to Buhari’s family, close associates, and supporters across Nigeria. Tinubu emphasized that Buhari’s patriotism was best seen through his actions, not mere words. “He was respectful without pretence to his peers and kind to those who served under him,” Tinubu remarked. “Even in death, he kept the calm spirit that defined his life. He was a good man, an honourable and decent man.”
President Tinubu arrived at the Council Chambers at about 5:27 p.m., where most cabinet members were already seated. The tribute began with the national anthem before the President delivered his remarks.
Buhari was buried on Tuesday in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, according to Islamic rites.
