Court Remands 17-Year-Old and 25-Year-Old for Allegedly Trafficking Teenagers to Ghana

A Lagos court remands a 17-year-old girl and a 25-year-old woman for allegedly trafficking two teenagers to Ghana for slavery.

A 17-year-old girl, Damilola Basiru, and a 25-year-old woman, Loveth Christian, were remanded in custody at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre by a Badagry Chief Magistrates Court on Thursday. They are accused of trafficking two teenagers, aged 18 and 15, to Ghana under the guise of providing them with better opportunities, only to sell them into slavery. The court heard that the trafficking incident took place on April 26, at approximately 1:30 p.m., in the Ajara Agamathen area of Badagry. The two women are facing charges of human trafficking and contemporary slavery, in violation of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Chief Magistrate Patrick Adekomaiya, who did not allow the defendants to enter a plea, has directed that the case file be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for further review. The case is set for adjournment on June 30 for advice from the DPP.
