Nigeria has successfully arrested individuals listed on the INTERPOL Red List, following a significant boost in border security measures. This development was announced by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on May 20, 2025, during a regional workshop on maritime security held in Lagos State. The arrests occurred within just two days and involved criminals wanted by several European countries, including Italy and the Republic of Ireland.
Tunji-Ojo attributed these arrests to Nigeria’s recent investments in surveillance and intelligence-gathering technologies at key entry points into the country. The minister shared that Nigeria now has an Advanced Passenger Information (API) system for the first time, which enables immigration officers to pre-screen passengers and query their travel history, criminal records, and other relevant details. This capability, introduced under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, allows the country to fulfill its international obligations and enhance its security measures.
The arrests mark a significant achievement for Nigeria, highlighting the effectiveness of its newly integrated systems in preventing criminal activities at air terminals. The Minister emphasized that these security improvements have ensured that Nigeria is now aligned with international standards, enabling the country to protect its borders better and contribute to global counterterrorism efforts.
