FIFA has ordered the relegation of Kenyan football club Muhoroni Youth after the team was found guilty of match manipulation. The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) announced this decision on Friday, confirming the senior team’s expulsion from the second-tier National Super League. Muhoroni Youth will now compete in the third-tier Division One League in the upcoming season.
The FKF expressed its full support for FIFA’s ruling, emphasizing its firm position against match-fixing and any activities that undermine the integrity of football. This decision is part of broader efforts to address corruption in Kenyan football, which has long struggled with cases of match manipulation.
Earlier this year, former national team goalkeeper Patrick Matasi faced suspension following allegations of his involvement in fixing a 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Cameroon. The match ended in a 4-1 loss for Kenya, heavily denting their chances of qualifying for the finals in Morocco later this year.
Match-fixing scandals have plagued Kenyan football for years. FIFA had previously banned four Kenya-based players, one permanently, in 2020 for their role in an international match-fixing conspiracy. Additionally, five referees were suspended over related allegations.
The Kenya Institute of Public Policy Research and Analysis has highlighted how deeply match-fixing has infiltrated the sport, affecting both grassroots games and professional leagues. These developments mark an ongoing crackdown aimed at restoring trust and fairness in Kenyan football.
