Kidnap Suspects Arrested in Anambra as Police Recover Guns and Ammunition

Anambra police arrest two suspected kidnappers, uncover hidden weapons, and link them to a N17.5 million ransom case.

Police officers from the Rapid Response Squad and Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Anambra have arrested two individuals suspected of involvement in kidnapping. The arrests were made as part of the state’s ongoing security operation known as Operation Udo Ga Achi Zero Kidnapping.

The suspects, identified as 52-year-old Celestine Onuyia and 45-year-old Jacinta Okolo Udenka, were picked up in Oba, located in Idemili South Local Government Area. Their arrest followed a tip-off received by the police.

During the operation, the officers recovered one pump-action shotgun, seven single-barrel Dane guns, and 28 live cartridges. Further investigation and questioning of the suspects led to the discovery of two additional AK-47 rifles and two empty magazines hidden in a location at Omasi in the Ayamelum Local Government Area.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspects are linked to a kidnapping case in Nnewi from July 2024. In that case, the kidnappers reportedly collected a ransom of ₦17.5 million before releasing the victim.

The male suspect, Celestine, is said to operate as a native doctor who supplies charms and stores weapons for the gang. Jacinta is believed to gather information about intended victims before the group carries out their plans.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, stated that the command is committed to seeing the investigation through and will continue working to ensure all suspects involved are brought to justice. He also emphasized the importance of these actions in stopping further criminal activities in the region.
