Neymar Extends Santos Deal as He Targets World Cup Return

Neymar signs a six-month contract extension with Santos as he aims to regain fitness and form ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Neymar has agreed to stay with Santos until the end of 2025 as he works toward potentially returning to Brazil’s national team for the 2026 World Cup. The 33-year-old forward announced a statement released by the club on Tuesday. He described the decision as deeply personal, calling Santos more than a team—his home, roots, and life.

Having launched his career at Santos before moving to European giants Barcelona and PSG, Neymar returned to the Brazilian side in January following a difficult spell with Saudi club Al-Hilal. Plagued by injuries, he played only seven matches in 17 months for the Saudi side. His current stint at Santos has seen him feature in 12 matches and score three goals across all competitions. However, his most recent league appearance ended with a red card for a handball goal against Botafogo.

Santos, currently struggling in the domestic league, sits just above the relegation zone on goal difference after 12 games. Neymar’s off-pitch behavior has also sparked criticism, including his appearance at the Rio Carnival and participation in the King’s League while still recovering from injuries.

Despite holding the record as Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals—two more than the legendary Pelé—Neymar’s World Cup dreams have been marred by injuries and disappointment. He was recalled for qualifiers in March but pulled out due to a thigh problem. In May, new national team coach Carlo Ancelotti omitted him from his first squad, explaining that Neymar had just returned from injury but remained part of Brazil’s long-term plans.

The win marks Virginia’s first home triumph over a top 10 team since their 2005 victory against the Seminoles. Excited fans rushed onto the field the moment Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos’ last-second throw into the end zone fell incomplete. While Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell confirmed his players made it safely to the locker room, he admitted he was unsure if the chaotic scene left any issues. Virginia head coach Tony Elliott expressed regret that he could not shake Norvell’s hand, stressing his respect for the opposing coach and his hope that no one was seriously hurt. The Associated Press reported that one fan was carried off on a stretcher and several others received attention from stadium staff. Under new ACC rules, Virginia will face a fine for the field storming. The first offense comes with a $50,000 penalty, with repeated violations leading to higher fines. Morris had a strong outing with 229 passing yards, two touchdown passes, and three interceptions on 26-of-35 attempts. Running back J’Mari Taylor added 99 rushing yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. For Florida State, Castellanos threw for 254 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, while also scoring once on the ground. The victory sent shockwaves through Charlottesville as the Cavaliers celebrated a memorable night that will stand as one of their biggest wins in recent history.
