The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised serious concerns about the state of democracy in Nigeria, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to weaken key democratic institutions. In a statement released to mark June 12 Democracy Day, the PDP urged the National Assembly, the Judiciary, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to defend their independence and uphold the constitution.
Signed by PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the statement alleged that the APC is pushing for a one-party state by using government powers to suppress opposition, ignore legal procedures, and manipulate institutions. The party warned that these actions threaten the foundation of Nigeria’s democracy.
The PDP pointed to the conduct of the 2024 Edo State Governorship election and the appointment of a Sole Administrator in Rivers State as clear examples of constitutional violations. According to the statement, such moves show a pattern of control that ignores public will and legal limits.
The party connected its warning to the legacy of Chief MKO Abiola, saying June 12 represents a fight against dictatorship and injustice. The PDP claimed the APC has abandoned the democratic values of justice, freedom, and fair elections that Abiola stood for.
It also accused the APC of using poverty as a political tool and called for a reversal of policies that worsen the lives of ordinary Nigerians. The PDP demanded that the federal government stop interfering in the work of the National Assembly, INEC, and the Judiciary. It emphasized the need for the government to allow a free press and respect the law.
As Nigerians marked Democracy Day, the PDP congratulated citizens and encouraged them not to give up on democracy. The party called on the public, civil society, and international allies to join hands in defending democratic values. It urged people to stay hopeful, remain peaceful, and support the PDP’s efforts to prepare for the 2027 general elections.
