David Beckham Becomes ‘Sir’ as UK Honours Icons of Sport, Music, and Drama

David Beckham receives knighthood for services to sport and charity, joined by Roger Daltrey, Gary Oldman, and others in King's Birthday Honours.

Football star and philanthropist David Beckham has officially been knighted, earning the title “Sir David” after years of public admiration and service. The 50-year-old former England captain, who also made headlines off the pitch as a global fashion figure, was honoured for his contributions to both sport and charity. His wife, Victoria Beckham—former Spice Girl turned fashion mogul—now holds the title of Lady Beckham.

Beckham’s knighthood comes over two decades after he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003. Expressing gratitude, Beckham described the honour as humbling and meaningful, reflecting on his upbringing in East London and the pride his family had in their British roots.

The latest honours list also celebrates achievements in music and drama. Roger Daltrey, co-founder of the legendary rock band The Who, has been knighted at age 81 for his dedication to music and tireless charity work. He has supported the Teenage Cancer Trust for more than 20 years, organising fundraising concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Daltrey called the knighthood a dream come true and credited the award to the unsung heroes behind the cause.

Acclaimed actor Gary Oldman also received a knighthood for his long-standing contributions to drama. Best known for his Oscar-winning role as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, the 67-year-old’s filmography spans blockbusters like Harry Potter, The Dark Knight trilogy, and cult classics. His work has grossed over $11 billion worldwide.

Additional honours went to stage legend Elaine Page, who has been named a Dame for her role in Evita, and author Pat Barker, celebrated for her Regeneration Trilogy, which chronicles the psychological impact of World War I.

Beckham’s rise to knighthood reflects a broader journey beyond football. He has become a cultural icon, blending sport, fashion, and business into a personal brand followed across the world. Once criticised and even vilified during his playing career—most notably after a red card in the 1998 World Cup—Beckham has since transformed his image through consistent charitable work and public service. His knighthood was once delayed due to scrutiny over a reported tax issue, which he was later cleared of.

Experts say this recognition solidifies his legacy as more than just a footballer. It highlights a deliberate, decades-long evolution into a respected public figure whose influence now reaches far beyond the pitch.
