Bishop T.D. Jakes, founder and senior pastor of The Potter’s House Church in Dallas, has officially stepped down from his pastoral role, entrusting the leadership to his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Touré Roberts. The 67-year-old church leader made the announcement during a deeply emotional sermon, encouraging the congregation to embrace the new leaders with warmth and support.
In his heartfelt message, Jakes highlighted that the decision to pass on the leadership was not only based on family ties but also on the couple’s deep commitment to the church over the years. He emphasized the significance of legacy and their immersion in the church’s mission and values.
Jakes’ decision to retire from his senior role follows a health scare in November, when he suffered a heart attack, alongside a defamation lawsuit filed against him. However, despite stepping down from his pastoral duties, Jakes assured his followers that he would remain active in community outreach and continue his ministry work.
Reflecting on his long tenure, Jakes shared, “I have seen too many men build something and stay so long that they kill what they built,” stressing the importance of ensuring the church thrives even after his departure. As he moves toward new ventures in the community, Jakes expressed his desire to leave behind a lasting impact before age becomes a limiting factor.
In his final remarks, Jakes called on his congregation to warmly welcome the leadership of Pastor Touré and Pastor Sarah, encouraging them to step into this new chapter with faith and trust.
