Soldier Sentenced to Death for Killing Girlfriend as Court Upholds Military Discipline

Nigerian soldier gets death sentence for girlfriend’s murder, another jailed 10 years for robbery. Military court delivers firm judgment in Enugu.

A General Court-Martial in Enugu State has sentenced Private Adamu Mohammed to death by hanging for killing his girlfriend, Hauwa Ali. The decision was reached by an 11-member panel led by Brigadier General Sadisu Buhari at the Nigerian Army’s 82 Division.

The court found Mohammed guilty of murder under Section 106 (a) of the Armed Forces Act, 2004. His service record and appeal for leniency were reviewed, but the court prioritized justice for the victim and the need to maintain discipline in the armed forces.

Private Abubakar Yusuf was also convicted by the same court for robbing a shopping centre in Enugu. Although the panel agreed he was guilty under Section 107(1)(b) of the Armed Forces Act, it did not reach a unanimous decision for the highest penalty. Instead, he received a 10-year prison sentence based on Section 140(3) of the Act.

Brigadier General Buhari stressed that the Nigerian Army does not tolerate criminal behaviour. He added that these sentences reflect the military’s commitment to justice, accountability, and upholding the rule of law.

Both judgments are still subject to approval by higher military authorities before they take full effect.
